Welcome
to Information
Technology Services at
Exeter
In
addition to
being an academic
resource, technology
facilitates
communication
with others
on and off campus,
and, for many,
technology serves
as recreation.
This information,
and the policy
statement, are
provided to
give students
and parents
information
about technology
use at Exeter
before leaving
home and during
initial days
on campus. Included
are highlights
of policies
pertaining to
the use of computers,
the network,
telephones,
voicemail, and
recommendations
on how to use
the network
safely and effectively.
ITS welcomes
you to Phillips
Exeter Academy!

Restrictions
on Computer
Use in the
Dormitory
Our goal is to provide consistent
access and service to the
community. Our experience
indicates that any of the
following activities can
negatively impact others
in your dorm and on the
network or may pose security
risks to the network. Therefore,
if any of these activities
are detected, and your computer
is found to be the source,
your network access may
be suspended while we investigate.
- Running
file or application
servers
- Modem
use
- Absence
of a current
anti-virus program
(Norton or McAfee,
for instance)
- File
sharing where
it impacts performance
or violates
copyright law
- Running
tools or applications
that subvert
network security
Please
carefully read
through the Academy
Network Resources and Policies section of the E-Book.
Ask questions
if you don’t
understand any
items.
Day
Student Computer
Access
Day students may access
the network from classrooms,
library and Academy Center day student lab. Web-based
resources are also available
from off-campus see "How
To Documentation."
Standard
Software
Microsoft
Office, Internet Explorer,
Norton AntiVirus, and other
required academic software
is available to students
on Academy-owned computers
in various campus locations.
For convenience, and to
avoid file incompatibilities,
you may wish to purchase
Microsoft
Office for your
own personal computer. In
addition, if you plan to
connect your dorm computer
to the network, you will
be required to purchase
and maintain current anti-virus
software (such as Norton
AntiVirus). ITS also recommends spyware/malware removal tools. For more information
and free downloads go to our Spyware/Adware
Information page.
Laptops
Some students choose to bring a laptop and can connect with an ethernet cable
throughout campus wherever data ports are available.
Wireless Connectivity
Wireless hot spots are located in several locations on campus for the Academy Community and guests in Phelps Academy
Center, Academy Library, College Counseling, Physics science classrooms, and Phillips Hall basement.
Internet
Services
Since the Academy is not
a commercial ISP, and because
ITS must guarantee a certain
level of service and security
for academic and administrative
services, we can only guarantee
the protocols necessary
for typical communication
and academic research through
our residential gateway.
These include, but are not
limited to, standard ports
for http, https, telnet,
ftp, AOL and AOL IM. If
you are attempting to use
a non-standard port or unique
service, you will likely
need to work through the
issues on your own.
Telephones
and Voice Mail
You will need to bring your
own analog (not digital)
telephone from home or purchase
one when you arrive on campus.
There are several local stores in area to purchase phones. The Academy does
not support cellular or cordless phones. The Academy provides boarding students
with dial
tone, local access, intra-campus
dialing, and voice mail.
Day students may use campus
phones to access their Academy
voice mail account.
Technology
Fee For School Year 2008-09
The Academy will charge
an annual technology fee of $280 for boarding students and $110 for day
students.
This fee includes
access to the Internet, an e-mail address, a voice mailbox and free local
calling. Fees for
students receiving
financial aid
are discounted
in the same
proportion as
the aid. Telephones
are available
to financial
aid
students for
use during the
school
year. Interested
students should
contact the
Financial Aid
Office directly
at (603) 777-3437
to reserve a
phone.
Quantities are
limited.
Long
Distance Calling
Although the Academy provides
long distance lines, it
does not provide long distance
student billing service.
For long distance direct
dialing, families may choose
to contract with the Academy’s
student long distance billing
service. Additional information
will be mailed to you directly
by the vendor, STC Services,
and will be available at
registration. Alternatively,
students may choose to call
collect or use a debit or
credit calling card from
the vendor of their choice.
Please note that you may
not select another vendor
for direct dialing long
distance calls.
Need
more info?
You will receive additional
information in materials
prepared for registration
in your PEA PO Box. Orientation
sessions will also be offered
to parents and students
that same day in the Academy Center Forum.
In
the interim, please
direct questions
regarding policy
to the Dean of
Students Office
at (603) 777-3411.

technical questions,
contact Information
Technology (603)
