History of Technology on Campus
In the 1960's, Exeter was one of the only secondary schools with a direct link to the Dartmouth College computer system. A series of Hewlett Packard and Digital time-sharing systems were installed and used on campus during the 70's and 80's. IBM compatible and Macintosh computers were introduced in the 1980's. They were soon followed by the introduction of Novell ARCNet and AppleTalk networks as teachers and students looked for an easier way to share resources and information. In the early 90's the first Ethernet LAN was installed and technology began to impact the culture of Exeter. Exeter became a member of the Internet community in 1994, opening up communications with the outside world and laying the foundation for a major push forward to integrate the newest technology and vast resources of the Internet into the educational experience that is Phillips Exeter Academy.

Implementing a Campus-Wide Network
In 1995, following the introduction of the Internet to the faculty and students of Computer Science, a Technology Steering Committee (TSC) was formed to develop tactical and strategic plans for the implementation of new technologies on campus. The resulting plan incorporated services for phone, voice mail and data connectivity for every student, faculty and staff member. The Library was identified as the center of technology with the Network Operation Center (NOC) located in the building. Capacity planning identified the cable plant necessary to support present needs plus allow for future growth and the possible addition of technologies like video distribution, debit cards, CTI, telemetry and HVAC systems to the network. A timeline was established to implement this technology plan:

Year 1 — 1995-1996 — Planning and Management Organization
Year 2 — 1996-1997 — Cabling and Infrastructure Development
Year 3 — 1997-1998 — Broad-based connectivity to all users
Year 4 — 1998-1999 — Intranet Application Development
Year 5 — 1999 — Consideration of new technologies and Review
